I don’t know about you guys, but sod the actual people watching, more than ever I’m using Instagram as a bit of a platform to lust after, stalk, pin and purchase clothes.
I guess it’s that influencer reach working to a T; drawing us in by the smiles and brights; the dreams of what we could be draped in as we set about our day. Some say social media is unhealthy for our mental health – Dad Muddling Through would say it’s unhealthy for our bank balance and wardrobe capacity.
At the moment, I’m obsessing over Spring wear. Stripes, brights, slogan tees, midi length skirts and pumps. They seem to be everywhere except in my wardrobe so I have been on a mission to put that right. You know you’re on my wavelength if you automatically tap the torso of any full length instagram squares and actually feel a bit annoyed if the outfit source isn’t tagged.
Part of the draw to purchasing from some of the retailers we have seen pop up in our feed is that by doing so, we are often supporting small businesses. Women, mums, entrepreneurs and those who have dared to take a leap of faith into something new. It’s introduced me to styles, icons who wear them so well, and a level of confidence in embracing what you love that I otherwise might never have encountered.
By opting into an independent brand, it’s not just a fashion statement you’re making, it’s a movement in supporting a small business, subscribing to a political statement, and often a display of individuality and personality.
On my scrolls for clothes, whilst dipping my toe into some hashtags such as #whatmamaworemonday and #mumdresscode I’ve discovered some beaut pieces that I simply can only dream of filling my wardrobe up with. The lust is real, and it’s taking a LOT of effort to keep the impulse buys in check. It’s like window shopping every ten minutes of your life. (*I try and make it every fifteen. Must try harder).
So alongside the Essex Mama, Selfish Mothers, and Scamp and Dude, who are the new players coming up through the ranks, drawing us in with their bold designs and fun graphics that seem to capture something in so many of the #Instamum community?
Definitely, absolutely one to watch is Stripy Giraffe. AKA Ruth, a Mum of three starting up her fashion prints biz from her cottage in the country.
Ruths bold sweats had my eye all autumn winter season, and whilst I was about to hit order, then the sun came out and I had an epiphany. The spring breton is what I need in my life right now. You can have a little insta-lust over here designs via her instagram page too…
Ruth kindly let me customise my own exciting collaboration between Stripy Giraffe and MMT for Spring Summer 2018. There was obviously one choice for my slogan…
The quality of the top is exactly what I was hoping for – a relaxed fit in a light 100% cotton. Nothing too ‘stretch fit’ or 1998. Made from proper cotton, it’s not going to have you sweating on the school run, and is be perfect to layer up. Washable at 30ºC, which is an obvious requirement after a day fending off mucky paws / jam sandwiches / spaghetti bolognese / welly boot mud.
Got to talk about the colour pop of that print too…hello spring! I’m already dreaming of sunny days with my pink shades and lippy on with this little number. It’s exactly the kind of pallette I’m working to right now – be gone the greys of 80% of my clothes!
So with this shout out to Ruth, I hope you head over to @Stripy_Giraffe, give them a follow, and be part of their uprising. The time is now to be part of something special, and I wish Ruth every bit of luck along the way.
Ruth, definitely a member of the #CoolMumClub.
