GREATERSKIES Personalised star map review & giveaway

In our house, we have this thing with stars. I guess when you have experienced a life changing loss, there is often something that you associate with that moment in time, that person, which is a comfort to believe is always there in spirit. For some it’s feathers, butterflies, maybe Robins, but there is definitely something about seeing the brightest star in the night sky that makes us think of her.

When we were contacted by Greaterskies, I immediately felt blown away by their personalised star maps. The idea is simple – a crisp and clear image of the night sky on a chosen moment in time and geographical location.

There are so many possibilities for how you could personalise your starmap by Greaterskies; the day you and your partner met, the moment your child was born, or any given moment the stars seemed to align for you. Perhaps a pivotal moment in your life story, or a moment you said goodbye to someone special.

There is no question that the stars were a place of focus and strength for us over such a hard time in our lives – the sleepless nights we sat on the backdoor step staring up looking for answers, and the dark starry evenings we paced the streets to escape the mad feelings taking over when we sat indoors.

As Fathers Day approached last week, the man behind Greaterskies made an truly special Fathers Day gift come together for us.

I selected my date – November 11th 2013, an ironic twist of fate that remembrance day would always hold a different meaning to us, alongside my location in Kent, and as if by magic the preview appeared of the very night skies that we looked up to on those dark times, on the very night we had to let our second daughter go.

With your greaterskies print, you can choose any wording under your starmap to finish it off in your own personalised way. It could be ‘On this date, under these stars, my world changed forever’, perhaps a personal message to the recipient; the onlimit is your imagination (and perhaps a defined number of characters!).

For our poster, I chose to use some very sentimental lyrics from a song which was everywhere back in the Autumn of 2013, and became so significant to us. In fact, this was the song that was played at our daughters funeral and will always make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

“Well you only need the light when it’s burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go”

Obviously our starmap could be perceived as something sad, but in fact, anyone who has experienced maternal bereavement knows how important it is to remember, and that’s why we would be happy to see this starmap every day on our wall, reminding us to look up and smile.

I know this won’t be the last time I use Greaterskies for a special gift – this would be an incredible wedding, anniversary, Christening or even special birthday gift. Any time you really want to do something extra special but feel like all the obvious choices are just too, well, obvious.

Greaterskies personalised star maps are available with a number of different styles – a black ‘night sky’ background or white ‘classic’ background, plus different sizings, framed or unframed, and even in a downloadable file. All of these options mean you can really customise your starmap based on your needs or budget. A digital download costs £24.95 and prints start at £59.95 for a 40x50cm print (add £35 for frame), or £79.95 for 50x70cm (add £45 for a frame). P

Our Night sky star map arrived framed in the largest size, with a frame. Being UK based we can fully verify the one day delivery and our poster print was well packaged and as stunning as I had hoped.

Your custom poster is printed with care on high-quality 260 gsm photographic paper, with archival-quality UV-resistant inks. Colours will not fade over time when exposed to light.

If you choose the “Framed” option on checkout your print will come on a high-quality aluminium frame, with extra-transparent, thin Styrene. (Note that this is not glass, as glass is thicker and less transparent, detracting from the overall clarity.)

The downloadable file is also customisable into alternative colours at the click of a button, should you fancy changing it up or matching a colour scheme.

Regardless of how or why you customise a Greaterskies star map, the end result will consistently be a breathtaking piece of art that will generate a thousand wows for years to come.

If you have already visualised your own Greaterskies creation, you could be in with a chance of winning a large framed print worth £124.95 of your own over on my

Good Luck!

The start map is stunning, the song lyrics and your story made me sob though. What a beautiful way to remember your beautiful daughter. Contrary to what the lyrics said though, I am sure you knew you loved your daughter before you let her go… Pen x #coolmumclub
