Like most of us, we break up for the half term break this week, and with two whole weeks (and a week of parenting solo) ahead, it can be a bit daunting to know exactly what we are going to do with the kids without breaking the bank or getting cabin fever!
I’m always on the lookout for some seasonal local gems – pumpkin picking being the obvious choice, but when you’ve got a home grown patch, even that can be a bit of a novelty once you’ve got your photo of the kids in the wheelbarrow and carted home all of the pumpkins that you didn’t really need…
One activity I have signed up for without hesitation, is the Demelza Pumpkin Hunt which runs in several locations across Kent, East Sussex and London this half term on 25th and 26th October 2018.
This year the Pumpkin hunts are taking place in Gravesend, Greenwich and Sevenoaks on Thursday 25 October 2018, and Chislehurst, West Malling, Whitstable and Hastings on Friday 26 October. At just £5 per child age 3-11 (adults and under threes are free but can’t collect goodies) this is set to be a perfect family activity for the run up to Halloween.
Each event has been sponsored by local businesses in support of Demelza Children’s Hospice, and so by taking part in this event you are also contributing toward Demelza’s charitable fund and the incredible work they do.
The Pumpkin Hunts last around an hour and will be totally family friendly – perfect if your little trick or treaters are more about the treat than the trick!
Children will be given their own Pumpkin Passport to get stamped and will receive treats at stops along the route. Dress up in your most original Halloween costumes for the chance to win a fantastic family prize. Individual fancy dress winners from each of our Pumpkin Hunt locations will be entered into the Grand Pumpkin fancy dress costume competition for the chance to win a Merlin Family Pass worth up to £1,000!
I was lucky enough to visit Demelza House in Sittingbourne, Kent many years back and I’ll never forget being so humbled by how the staff and supporters change the lives of families at a time they need it the most.
At Demelza, they believe every child and young person who has a terminal condition should receive the care and attention they need to live the most fulfilling life they can, and that they and their families have the opportunity to build memories, for however long they have together.
Demelza has been providing this care since 1998 and, through the generosity of others and with events like Pumpkin Hunt, they can continue to be there for families for years to come.
So really, taking my kids along to support a Halloween childrens event in my local town is really the least I can do to support these incredible people.
